About the digital skills roadmaps

The RCPCH digital skills roadmaps help you build the digital knowledge and confidence needed for modern paediatric practice. We developed the roadmaps in response to a growing demand for clear, role relevant guidance on digital topics such as data, digital systems and innovation in healthcare.

What are the roadmaps?
The roadmaps provide self‑directed learning pathways so you can develop skills at your own pace. They are designed for you as a paediatrician or child health professional at any career stage who wants to engage more effectively with digital change.
The roadmaps are structured around domains of digital capability for children and young people's services, as identified in national training catalogues and by the NHS Digital Academy (NHSDA), NIHR, King’s Health Partners (KHP), RCPCH and the NHS e‑LfH digital learning programmes. Each domain includes:
- Learning topics at each level - From foundational awareness to advanced system leadership
- Mapped training courses - Direct links to current NHS, e‑LfH, NHSDA, KHP and specialist programmes
- A consistent language for digital skills - Helping you understand expectations and development needs
How can I use the roadmaps?
You can:
- Identify your current digital skill level and topic you are interested in
- Access recommended training and resources
- Set your progress on each level and topic, building your personalised development plan
- Explore what the next level involves

What are the recommended training and resources in the roadmaps?
The roadmaps link directly to NHS‑endorsed or high‑quality courses, including:
- NHS Digital Academy (Foundations, Continuous Improvement, Leadership)
- eLearning for Healthcare (clinical safety, remote care, Healthy Child Programme)
- KHP Digital Health Academy (AI, data science, co‑design)
- RCPCH digital resources
- NIHR remote monitoring evaluation
- FutureNHS Hub communities
How can I access the roadmaps if I'm not a member?
The Digital Health Hub, including the roadmaps, is exclusive to RCPCH members. We have a range of membership types open to both paediatricians and other child health professionals. See how you can join us.
How can I suggest new domains, topics or training resources for the roadmaps or give feedback?
We strongly encourage your feedback and suggestions! If you would like to suggest a new domain or topic, or recommend a digital learning resource, let us know and we will review. As this is a new member resource, we also welcome any feedback so we can continue to improve.
